William D. "Bill" Burroughs, 81, of Galena, IL, and formerly of Menominee, IL, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015, at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 A/M on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at St. Michael Church in Galena, with Rev. David Reese officiating. Burial will be in Nativity BVM Cemetery at Menominee, IL, where military honors will be accorded by members of VFW Post #2665.
Visitation will be from 3 P/M to 8 P/M on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, and after 9 A/M on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at St. Michael Church in Galena.
The Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7:30 P/M on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Bill was born on October 8, 1933, in Menominee Township of Jo Daviess County, IL, the son of Richard and Lucille (Ricke) Burroughs. He was a graduate of East Dubuque High School, Class of 1951. He married Marge Hilby on May 11, 1957 at Nativity BVM Church in Menominee. She preceded him in death on July 24, 1984. He later married Barbara Glasgow on March 14, 1987, at St. Francis De Sales Church in Hazel Green.
Bill was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the U. S. Army. Bill operated Bill Burroughs Construction Company and later was elected and served as Jo Daviess County Treasurer for approximately ten (10) years.
Bill was a member of St. Michael Parish in Galena was formerly a member of Nativity BVM Parish at Menominee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7527, of East Dubuque, which he helped establish, and was a Past Grand Knight. He was also a member of Msgr. C. F. Conley Assembly - 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus where he was a Past Faithful Navigator. Bill was also a member of the VFW Post #2665 and the American Legion. He was also a member of St. Michael Choir. He loved to sing, play golf, cribbage and euchre and enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends. He learned to play the accordion and organ from memory. He had a great love for his family and friends. He loved spending time in his tool shed behind his home. Anyone who knew Bill knew that every tool was well taken care of and always in its place.
Surviving are his wife, Barb Burroughs; a son, Michael (Karla) Burroughs, of Kaukauna, WI; a daughter, Michele (Bill) Berning, of Hazel Green, WI; five (5) grandchildren, Alecia and Benjamin, Kelsy, Clinton and Nicole; four (4) step-children, Steven (Vickie) Glasgow, of Dubuque, IA, Kevin (Michelle) Glasgow, of Oregon, WI, Sharon Mootz and Susan Moritz, both of Bettendorf, IA; fifteen (15) step-grandchildren; four (4) great-grandchildren; a brother, Karl (Eunice) Burroughs, of East Dubuque, IL; a sister, Sandy Conzett, of Cassville, WI; an aunt, Della Just, of Clarkfield, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Marge (Hilby) Burroughs.
The family would like to give a "special thanks" to Dr. Vandigo, the nurses and staff at Midwest Medical Center in Galena, the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community and Hospice of Dubuque.
