Obituary

Victor V. Sprengelmeyer, 69, of East Dubuque, IL, the husband of Mary Beth (Henkels), the father of Dr. Michelle Sprengelmeyer (Joel Wright), Bettendorf, IA, and James (Katherine) Sprengelmeyer, Iowa City, IA; and the grandfather of Emma and Olivia Wright, and William, Sarah, and Joseph Sprengelmeyer, returned to his heavenly father at 3:07 P/M, Saturday, November 17, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clincis, Iowa City, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Christ the King Chapel on the campus of Loras College, Dubuque, IA with Fr. Robert Beck officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, IA.

Friends may call from 3 P/M to 9 P/M, Tuesday, November 20, 2012 and from 9:15 A/M to 10:15 A/M, Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Christ the King chapel on the campus of Loras College.

The Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Victor was born December 25, 1942, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Lucian and Loretta (Bistram) Sprengelmeyer. He graduated from St. Mary's Grade School, East Dubuque, IL, attended Loras Academy, was part of the first graduating class of Wahlert High School, and attended Loras College before graduating from the University of Iowa, College of Law.

Victor married Mary Beth on June 20, 1966, at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque, IA.

Victor joined the law firm of Gilloon, Klauer, Stapleton and Ernst following law school, eventually becoming a partner in the firm. He later opened a law office with his brother-in-law at the corner of 14th and Main Streets. During his career, he also served as a State's Attorney and Public Defender for Jo Daviess County, IL, and helped found the Public Defender's Office for Dubuque County, IA. He retired as a Circuit Court Judge in 2006, following nearly twenty years on the bench.

Victor loved his grandchildren and spoiled them at every opportunity. He enjoyed traveling, particularly throughout the American West where he could pursue his interest in wildlife and scenic photography. He was a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching and attending Cubs games.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and William.

In lieu of flowers, a Victor Sprengelmeyer Memorial Fund has been established to benefit local charities.
