Mr. Sherrard owned and operated Sherrard Sinclair Station, in Hanover, IL, prior to moving to Galena. He worked for Willowa Engineering for eighteen (18) years as a driver and mechanic. Following his career at Willowa, he worked at Illinois Bell Telephone Company, where he retired in 1990. After retirement, Mr. Sherrard enjoyed small engine repairs in his spare time.
He was born on December 29, 1933, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Arthur and Mary Marcella (Peschang) Sherrard. He married Donna M. Bastian, on August 9, 1955, at St. Mary's Church, in Galena. She preceded him in death on February 27, 2008.
He was a graduate from Hanover High School and a member of St. Michael's Parish. He was a "jack of all trades and master of none" and would tackle any project brought to him. His grandchildren always said, "Grandpa can fix anything". His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are two (2) daughters, Theresa (Darrel) Eustice, of Galena, IL, and Patricia (fiance', Pat Thomas) Houtakker, of Shullsburg, WI; four (4) grandchildren, Christopher Smith, Chad (Amanda) Smith, and Nathan and Katrina Houtakker; a step-grandson, Cody Eustice; two (2) great-grandchildren, Jenna and Mason Smith; a step great-granddaughter, Megan Fischer; a sister, Rose (Delbert) Ertmer, of Woodbine, IL; a sister-in-law, Doris (Dan Levens) Glick, of Galena, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles (Chuckie) Sherrard; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, C. Burnell and Vivian Bastian; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Glick.
The family would like to extend a "sincere thank-you" to the staff of the Galena-Stauss Senior Care Facility, the staff of Hospice of Dubuque, and to Father Kos, for the wonderful care and compassion given to our Dad and Grandpa during this most difficult time.
