Tom was born on June 26, 1945, in Galena, the son of William "Sonny" and Harriett (Smith) Shellhorn. He attended Galena High School and was united in marriage to Lynn M. Benson, on September 17, 1966, in Dubuque, IA.
He was employed at Kraft Foods in Galena for twenty-seven (27) years before it closed and later worked for the Galena Territory for nineteen (19) years until his retirement.
Tom was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving on the USS Taconic in Santa Domingo. He loved woodworking making ducks and canes, hunting and fishing, watching the birds and spoiling his grandchildren. Tom had many wisetales to tell - and believe 1/4 of what he said. A friend said you could count on Tom for advice you needed and a shoulder to lean on.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn; four (4) children, Scott (Patty) Shellhorn, of Rockford, IL, Todd (Tracy) Shellhorn, of Winnebago, IL, Heather (Dan) Steines, of East Dubuque, IL, and Denise (Mark) Cornille, of Elmhurst, IL; nine (9) grandchildren; his in-laws, Judy (Larry) Heim, Hazel Edmonds, Steve (Diane) Benson, Bea (Jack) Ranslem, Lee (Karen) Benson, Darlene Harber, Kevin (Debbie) Benson, Allen (Julia) Benson, and Carolyn Benson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Sonny" and Harriett Shellhorn; a brother, Wayne Shellhorn; his daughter-in-law, Jeanne Shellhorn; and two (2) brothers-in-law, David and Bernard Benson.
Lynn and family wish to give special "thanks" to the Galena Police Department, Galena EMS, and the Midwest Medical Center Emergency Department, for their quick response, help and kindness!
