Sister Mary John Agnes Smith, BVM, 89, of Marian Hall, 1050 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, IA, passed away, on Friday, March 25, 2016, at Marian Hall.

Visitation will be from 2 P/M to 4 P/M, on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Marian Hall Chapel, followed by a prayer service at 4 P/M. Funeral liturgy be held at a later date. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Sisterr Mary John Agnes was an elementery school teacher and principal in San Francisco, CA, Lincoln, NE, Chicago, IL, Boulder, CO, and West Des Moines, IA, where she also served as adult day care director, resource person and volunteer.

She was born in Grimes, IA, on March 6, 1927, daughter of John William and Agnes Ann Howe Smith. She entered the BVM congregation on September 8, 1945. She made her first profession of vows on March 19, 1948, and her final profession on August 15, 1953.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters Rita Evans and Madonna Smith. She is survived by a brother, Daniel J. Grimes, of Grimes, IA; a sister, Jeanne Phelan, of Zearing, IA; nieces and nephews; the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 70 years.
