Obituary

Orland M. Merfeld, Sr, 78, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 8:18 P/M, Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, Monday, May 6, 2013, at St. Mary's Church, East Dubuque, with Fr. Michael Barry officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Friends may call from 1 P/M to 4 P/M, Sunday, May 5, 2013, and after 9:00 A/M, Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 1 P/M, Sunday.

Orland was born on April 1, 1935, near Bernard, IA, the son of Leo and Lettie (Rogers) Merfeld. He married Mavis "Mazie" Chadwick on September 6, 1958. He was a veteran of the Army serving during the Korean Conflict.

Orlie received his GED on April 10, 1985, and on February 7, 1989, received his diploma from the State of Illinois EPA for a Class 2 Wasterwater Treatment Works Operator.

Orlie was formerly employed at the Dubuque Packing Company, the City of East Dubuque, and worked security for American Trust & Savings Bank.

Surviving are his wife, Mavis "Mazie" Merfeld; five children, David (Joyce) Merfeld, Mary Jo (Mark) Dalen, and Marcie (Steve) High, all of East Dubuque, IL, Orland Merfeld, Jr., and Donald (Joni) Merfeld, both of Dubuque, IA; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Mary Tigges, Leonard (Eileen) Merfeld, and Gerry Skahill, all of Dubuque, IA, Eileen (Allen) Redmond, of Marion, IA, Carl Merfeld, Dubuque, IA, Willie (Mary Ann) Merfeld, of Bellevue, IA, and Madonna (Paul) McAndrews, of Dubuque, IA; a brother-in-law, Paul Kane, of Bernard, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Orlie was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Mae Schauer; three sisters, Margaret Buchanan, Grace Kane, and LaVerne Merfeld; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Merfeld; and three brothers-in-law, Alfred Tigges, Tom Buchanan, and Bob Skahill.
