Mary Jane (Werner) Roth, died suddenly at her home on May 31, 2015, which was her 85th birthday. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren during a beautiful day of celebration. Wake services will be held at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL, on Wednesday June 3, 2015, from 4 P/M to 8 P/M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 A/M at St. Mary's Church in East Dubuque, IL, on Thursday, June 4, 2015, Fr. Dean Smith officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.
Mary was born and raised in East Dubuque, IL, the daughter of Russell "Spike" and Ruth "Beck" Werner. She attended East Dubuque High School and Teacher's College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, IA. She married James E. "Goph" Roth in East Dubuque on June 12, 1954, following Goph's return from the Korean War. The couple moved to Cherokee, IA, and then Des Moines, IA, before returning to East Dubuque in 1965. Together they raised eight (8) children.
Mary worked in accounting before and after the years when she and her husband owned and operated Goph's Hardware in East Dubuque (1965-1976). Mary retired at the age of seventy-six (76) from McCoy Group, Truck Country of Iowa. Following retirement, Mary volunteered at UnityPoint-Finley Hospital. During her lifetime, she spent many hours participating in clubs and organizations. She was a long time parishoner at St. Mary's Church in East Dubuque.
Mary loved socializing with her wide circle of friends, being at Frentress Lake, fishing, playing cards(especially Bridge), traveling with her family and friends, watching three generations of family compete in a wide variety of sports, and her pet dogs. Most of all, Mary loved her family to whom she was a friend, mentor, and role model serving as the matriarch of the Werner/Roth families and providing constant support to all.
Mary is survived by three (3) daughters, Kathy (Loras) McQuillen, of Holy Cross, IA, Kim (Jim) Gau, of Guttenberg, IA, Cindy (John) Gilligan, of Dubuque, IA; five (5) sons, Jim Roth, of Woodridge, IL, John (Karen) Roth, of Naperville, IL, Bill (Judy) Roth, of Marion, IA, Bob (Ann) Roth, of Peosta, IA, and Dave Roth, of Naperville, IL. She had a special relationship with each of her twenty-one (21) grandchildren and was blessed to meet her first four (4) great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-eight (48) years, James E. "Goph" Roth, who died in 2003; her parents, Russell "Spike" and Ruth Werner-Laskaris; two (2) brothers, Robert and Richard Werner; sisters-in-law, Grete and Pat Werner; brother-in-law, Charles Roth; and just recently, her canine companion of the past nine (9)years, Gigi.
