Obituary

Mary M. Dittmar, 87, of Galena, IL, passed away Thursday morning, March 14, 2013, at the Bell Tower Retirement Community, East Dubuque, IL.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 A/M, Monday, March 18, 2013, at the Westminister Presbyterian Church, Galena, with Rev. Jim McCrea officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

Friends may call from 2 P/M to 7 P/M, Sunday, March 17, 2013, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena, and after 9:30 A/M on Monday at the church.

Mary was born on May 9, 1925, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Walter and Rosa (Lindemann) Heagstedt. She attended Blackburn College for two years and graduated from Park College with an Economics Degree. Mary worked in the personnel department at AT&T in Chicago before her marriage.

She was united in marriage to Walter A. Dittmar on August 23, 1952, in Chicago, IL. She and her husband farmed in West Galena Township until their retirement. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1992.

Mary was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women's Circle. She was a volunteer at the Galena Food Pantry, a member of the United Churches of Galena, and a member of C.A.R.P.

Mary loved working crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and reading. In her younger year she was very athletic and was asked to be in the Olympics for track but refused.

Mary loved watching and participating in her grandchildren's school and sporting events.

Surviving are her children, Karen (Brian) Lenstra, of Galena, IL, Laura Gray, of Pearl City, IL, and Carl (Maureen) Dittmar, of East Moline, IL; Six grandchildren, Nathan, Callyn (Ammon), Noah (April), Rachel (Shane) Gena, and Jason; and two great grandchildren, Annabel and Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Ted Heagstedt; a sister, Dorothy Dunkle; and three nephews.
