LaVerne J. "Vern" Capaul, 85, of the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, Dubuque, IA, formerly of East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 4:30 A/M, Sunday, September 14, 2014, at the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 A/M, on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at the Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, with Fr. Francis Steffen officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of East Dubuque American Legion Post #787.

Visitation will be from 9 A/M to 11 A/M, on Wednesday, at the Miller Funeral Home.

Vern was born on April 1, 1929, at Cornell, WI, the son of John and Minnie (Vanderloop) Capaul. Vern served in the Army from 1947-1954 and was awarded two (2) Purple Hearts. He was a member of Dubuque American Legion Post #6 for thirty-two (32) years, and was currently a member of American Legion Post #787 of East Dubuque.

Vern was formerly employed at Dubuque Blacktop, Thermolyne Corporation, and Mutual Wheel, retiring in 1991. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and will be remembered for selling sweetcorn on Wall Street in East Dubuque.

Surviving are his children, Daniel (Joanne) Capaul, of Sparta, WI, Donald (Doris) Capaul, of Epworth, IA, Dean Capaul, of Dubuque, IA, and Jolie (Bruce) Webb, of Tilden, WI; eight (8) grandchildren; and three (3) great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Raymond, Lucille, Betty, Bob, Mary Jane and Rita.

Vern's family wish to "thank" the staff at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab and Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care given to their father and grandfather.
