L. J. "Vern" Bromberg, 86, of East Dubuque, IL, formerly of Charles City, IA, and Tampa, FL, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, at Oak Park Place, in Dubuque, IA.
There will be no formal funeral services at this time. A Memorial Service will be held later in Charles City, IA.
The Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, IL, is serving the family.
Vern was born on June 25, 1927, on a farm southwest of Canby, MN, the son of Herman and Jennie (Saltee) Bromberg. He attended school in Canby, MN. He married Norma E. Vandevoorde in Marshall, MN, on October 8, 1945.
Vern served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps, attending both Central and Eastern Signal Corp Schools in the 1940's. He was employed by Radio Station KMHL in Marshall, MN, from 1948-1951, and Radio Station KCHA, Charles City, IA, from 1951-1955. He purchased KCHA in 1955 and built KCHA-FM in 1971.
He anchored the "Noon News" broadcast on KCHA in Charles City, IA for 30 years. Vern was known as "Freckled Freddie" on the country western show, Cedar Valley Ranch.
Vern was active in Charles City community endeavors. He was awarded the distinquished service award by the Iowa Jaycees. He also was Editor of the State Jaycee Paper, "Action". He served on a number of Boards of Directors includinng the Charles City Chamber of Commerce, also serving as President of the Board. He was a member of the Chamber Ambassadors, and a member of the Iowa & National Broadcasting Associations.
He sold KCHA in 1986, and retired to the Tampa, FL area. The family returned to the Midwest in 2006.
Surviving are his wife, Norma; a daughter, Pamela (Steve) Popelka, of Charles City, IA; a son, Barry (Kathy) Bromberg, of Dubuque, IA; three (3) grandchildren, Dirk (Kelly) , of Austin, TX, Trevor Bromberg, of Littleton, CO, and Theresa Bromberg, of Ft. Collins, CO; and one (1) great-grandson, Dax, of Austin, TX; and one (1) sister, Doris Reiners, of Lakeville, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, the Cancer Fund, and to Hospice of Dubuque.
