Obituary

John E. "Jack" Hartwig, 86, of Galena, passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 11, 2012, at his home surrounded by family.

Services will be at the Galena United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 10:30 A/M, with Pastor Patricia Allen-Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 P/M to 8 P/M, Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena.

John "Jack" was born on the Harry Hartwig, Sr. family farm in rural Galena, July 22, 1926, son of Harry and Neva (Schuler) Hartwig Sr. He graduated from Galena High School in 1943. He married his wife of 63 years, Harriet E. Snyder, on January 12, 1949, in Dubuque and she survives.

John "Jack" lived in Galena all his life where he farmed on the family farm with his brother and best friend, George. After retiring from farming in 1986, Jack and Harriet moved to town and he worked part time at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course for ten years.

John "Jack" was a lifetime member of the Galena United Methodist Church where he served on numberous committees. John "Jack" was a board member of the Greenwood Cemetery for many years. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Galena.

Most important to him was time spent with family and friends. He loved the outdoors, traveling, was an avid euchre player, and enjoyed a good game of golf. John "Jack" enjoyed watching the Bears, Cubs, and of course, the Galena Pirates.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Harriet; two daughters, Carol (Bruce) Beckman of Whitewater, WI, Karen (Syd) Sincock of Galena, IL, and a son, David (Cathy) Hartwig of Grafton, WI; six grandchildren, Angela (Ryan) Johnson, Shawnda (Christopher) Peters, Nathan Sincock (friend, Samantha Liddell), Tyler (Marilyn) Sincock, Rachel and Ryan Hartwig; six great grandchildren, Morgan and Sophie Johnson, Hunter and Halee Peters, and Brycen and Berkely Sincock; two sisters, Jean Muchow of Galena, IL, and Betty (Wayne) Gates, of Warren, IL; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Hartwig, of Galena, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Reitz; three brothers, William Hartwig, Harry Hartwig Jr., George Hartwig; two sister-in-laws, Eileen Hartwig and Jesse Hartwig; two brother-in-laws, Edmund (Pete) Reitz and Charles Muchow; and a son-in-law, Lee Colin.

The family would especially like to thank Jackie Houy for her wonderful care and compassion as John's caregiver. Many thanks also to Diane Dahlby, Bill Houy, Dr Vandigo, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jim, Heather, and Lisa.
