Obituary
James W. Winter, 83, of Galena, IL, passed away Monday morning, October 2, 2017, at home.
Graveside services will be at 11 A/M, on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at Greenwood Cemetery, in Galena, with Rev. Stacy Cavanaugh officiating.
Jim was born on January 11, 1934, at Hanover, IL, the son of George and Sarah (Turner) Winter. He was united in marriage to Audrey Bergman on July 26, 1958, at the South Presbyterian Church, now known at Westminster United Presbyterian Church, in Galena. She preceded him in death on August 17, 2015.
Jim received his B.S. at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He formerly taught in Stockton and Galena, IL, and was Principal of Cuba City, WI, High School. He also operated The Frame Shop, in Galena, for nearly (25) years. Jim was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church and served as a Ruling Elder. He was a member of Miner's Lodge #273, A.F. & A.M. and the Shriners. He was also a member of the Galena Chamber of Commerce and Galena Elks Lodge #882.
Surviving is a son, Thomas J. Winter, of Galena, IL; his siblings, John (Mary) Winter, of Winnebago, IL, and Kay (Allen) Smith, of Chadwick, IL; nieces and nephews, Rebecca Buening (Michael) Ferris, Patrick (Martha) Winter, Timothy (Melody) Winter, Kerry (Chuck) Sedivy, James (Aimee) Winter, Mary (Paul) Panther and Eric Smith; numerous great nieces and nephews, amongst them, special great nieces, Grace and Anna Putman, Lydia and Ceci Ferris; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Buening, of Galena, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Sarah; his wife, Audrey; a brother, Forest (Joanne) Winter; a brother-in-law, Ron Buening; two (2) nieces, Eydie and Sarah Winter; and two (2) nephews, John and Michael (Kris) Winter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Dubuque and Westminster United Presbyterian Church, of Galena, or the Galena EMT's.
The Miller Funeral Home, of East Dubuque, IL, is serving the family.
