Obituary

James L. "Jim" McCarthy, 85, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 12:40 P/M, on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Dubuque, IA, following a brief illness.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at St. Mary's Church, in East Dubuque, with Fr. Stephen Lundgren officiating.  Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 P/M to 7 P/M, on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the parish rosary will be recited at 3:45 P/M.  Friends may also call from 9:30 A/M to 10:15 A/M, on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the Church.

Jim was born on September 13, 1931, in Dubuque, IA, the son of William R. and Harriet E. (Hird) McCarthy.  He was united in marriage to Delores Berger, on April 6, 1953, at St. Columbkille's Church, in Dubuque.

He was a 1949 graduate of East Dubuque High School.  Jim farmed his entire life and enjoyed fishing, hunting, yard work, attending school and sporting events for his grandchildren.  He was a member of St. Mary's Parish.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-three (63) years, Delores; three (3) children, Connie (Jo) Schauer and Jim (Cathy) McCarthy, both of East Dubuque, IL, and Nancy (Dick) Delaney, of Dubuque, IA; eight (8) grandchildren, Jim, Katie, Jessica, Jason, Teresa, Jenny, Kayla and Bill; thirteen (13) great-grandchildren, Layney and Landon Schauer, Emalee, Anna and Reed Astgen, Alexander and Lucas Winders, Liam and Rowan Schauer, Tucker, Logan and Henry Martin, and Owen McCarthy, plus two (2) on the way; his brother, John "Jack" (Marge) McCarthy, of East Dubuque, IL; and a sister, Kathleen (Jim) Hollis, of Reno, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marion Conrad; two (2) brothers, William "Bill" and Robert "Bob" McCarthy; and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Mae Schauer.

Delores and family would like to "thank" the East Dubuque Fire Department, the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care given to Jim.
