Obituary

Harriet E. Hartwig, 87, of Galena, IL passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 24, 2012 at home surrounded by her family.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A/M, Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Galena United Methodist Church with Rev. Patricia Allen-Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena, IL.

Friends may call from 4 P/M to 8 P/M, Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena, IL.

Harriet was born in Dubuque, IA on July 13, 1925, the daughter of William and Georgia (Lembke) Snyder. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1943. She married her husband of 63 years, John E. Hartwig, on January 12, 1949 in Dubuque, IA. He preceded her in death August 11, 2012.

Upon graduation from high school she worked at A. Y. McDonald Company and J C Penney Company. After marriage she was a devoted homemaker raising her three children. In 1965 she returned to work at J C Penney until her retirement in 1987.

Harriet was a member of the Galena United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and served on various committees of the church. She was a member of the J C Penney Retiree Club where she enjoyed many friendships even after her retirement.

One of her greatest joys was entertaining family and friends. Harriet also enjoyed doing ceramics and using them for numerous gifts. She loved baking, shopping, dancing and spending time with grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memories are two daughters, Carol (Bruce) Beckman, Whitewater, WI, Karen (Syd) Sincock, Galena, IL; and a son, David (Cathy) Hartwig, Grafton, WI; six grandchildren, Angela (Ryan) Johnson, Shawnda (Christopher) Peters, Nathan Sincock (friend, Samantha Liddell), Tyler (Marilyn) Sincock, Rachel and Ryan Hartwig; six great grandchildren, Morgan and Sophie Johnson, Hunter and Halee Peters, and Brycen and Berkeley Sincock; three sisters-in-law, Jean Muchow and Mary Jo Hartwig, Galena, IL, Betty (Wayne) Gates, Warren, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preced in death by her husband, parents, five brothers-in-law, William Hartwig, Harry Hartwig, Jr, Edmund (Pete) Reitz, and Charles Muchow; three sisters-in-law, Eileen Hartwig, Jesse Hartwig, and Dorothy Reitz; and a son-in-law, Lee Colin.

The family would especially like to thank Jackie Houy for her wonderful care and compassion as Harriet's caregiver. Many thanks also to Bill Houy, Dr. Vandigo, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jim, Kelly, Heather and Lisa.
