Freda G. (Short) Shird, 91, formerly of 1851 Alta Vista Street, Dubuque, IA, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2014, at Manorcare Health Services, Dubuque, IA.

Funeral Services will be at 4 P/M, on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, IL, with Pastor Jack W. Redmond officiating. Family graveside services will be in the Ontario, WI Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 P/M to 4 P/M, on Wednesday, at the Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque.

Freda was born on October 20, 1923, near Ontario, WI, the daughter of George and Minnie (Mentor) Short. She married Verlyn R. "Bob" Shird on April 2, 1941, at Waukon, IA. He preceded her in death on May 25, 1995.

Freda was a Red Cross volunteer for many years and a member of the Red Cross Board of Directors.

Surviving are four (4) daughters, Sandy (James) Schadler, of Menominee, IL, Dona (Chuck) Ostrander and Darlene Stuart, both of Dubuque, IA, and Karla (Dale) Smith, of Cedar Rapids, IA; two (2) sons, Dean and Terry Shird, both of Dubuque, IA; ten (10) grandchildren, Jim, Jr., Bob, Casey, Alex, Austin, Jesse, Tina, Amy, Corby and Jazmine; eight (8) great-grandchildren, Lyric, Kobe, Wendy, Hunter, Ethan, Kristopher, Raeann and Ava; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob; four (4) children, Robert, Ronald, Kathryn Mary and Shelby; siblings, Harvey, Fred, Ethel and Dennis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Boys Town in memory of Robert and Freda Shird.

Freda's family wishes to "thank" "The Rose", especially Carol Sheets and staff, Manorcare Nursing and Rehab Center nurses and staff, Dr. Mark Runde and his nurses, Julie and Dawn, and Hospice of Dubuque nurses and staff, for the wonderful care given to their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
