Edward J. Slaats, 57, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away, on Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center, in Dubuque, IA.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 A/M, on Monday, April 13, 2015, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, in Dubuque, with Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque, IL Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 P/M to 6 P/M, on Sunday, April 12, 2015, at the Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 1 P/M. Members of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department will meet at 4 P/M, on Sunday, at the funeral home.
Ed was born on September 4, 1957, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Nicholas and Rita (Runde) Slaats, Jr. He married the love of his life, Kathleen Hefel, on October 14, 1978, at St. Mary's Church in Dubuque.
After attending East Dubuque High School, he worked at AIH for fourteen (14) years as a salesman. He then attended the Police Training Institute in Champaign, IL. Ed served in East Dubuque for many years as a police officer, fireman, EMT and was a former member of the East Dubuque City Council. Most recently he was employed at the Diamond Jo Casino as a Security Manager.
Ed's heart and soul went into his business, "Grandpa Porky's Seasoning" and weekends with his wife, Kathy, at the Dubuque Farmers Market. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, including many fishing trips over the years with great friends, and attending stock car races at the Dubuque and Farley tracks. Nascar, Hawkeye football, and the Green Bay Packers were big parts of Ed's life. Every week he cheered on the #24, Jeff Gordon.
Surviving are his wife, Kathy; four (4) daughters, Jessica Slaats, Jolene (Tanner) Patterson, Janna (Josh) Frost and Juli (Matt) Weimerskirch; nine (9) grandchildren, Haley, Nicholas, Landen, Liam, Dominic, Chandler, Gabby, Jackson and Cooper; his siblings, Bob (Linda) Slaats, Evie (Ben) Brady, Fran Ploessl; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Slaats; his parents, Nick and Rita; his in-laws, Joe and Anna Hefel; and siblings; Joe Slaats, Diane Mellott, Carol Larson and Shirley Slaats; and brother-in-law, Robert "Buck" Atkinson.
