Douglas M. "Jim" Temperley, 89, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away at 7:30 P/M, Monday, August 5, 2013, at the Galena-Stauss Senior Care Community, surrounded by his family.
Services will be at 10:30 A/M, Friday, August 9, 2013, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, East Dubuque, with Pastor Kayla Lange officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of East Dubuque American Legion Post #787.
Friends may call from 4 P/M to 8 P/M, Thursday, August 8, 2013, at the Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where there will be a public Masonic service at 4:30 P/M. Members of the East Dubuque American Legion Post #787 will meet at 6:30 P/M at the funeral home.
Friends may also call after 9:30 A/M, Friday, at the Wesley United Methodist Church.
Doug was born on August 27, 1923, in East Dubuque, the son of Jacob and Evelyn (Fawcett) Temperley. He married Velda Glick on November 10, 1945 at the Apple River, IL Methodist Church.
He was a graduate of East Dubuque High School, Class of 1942. Doug served in the Army during WW II. He crossed the English Channel on D-Day+6, fighting thru France, Holland & Germany until November 2, 1944, when he was wounded and sent to a hospital in England for a month. He then returned to his unit and arrived back home on August 22, 1945. Doug received the Purple Heart.
Doug was employed at the Dubuque Packing Company for 37 year until his retirement. Doug was a member of Local #150A of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union, a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #787, Miners Masonic Lodge #273 AF and AM of Galena, IL, and the Eastern Star Lodge #740, of Stockton, IL. He was a former member of the East Dubuque School Board for 12 years, served as Republican Precinct Committeeman for Dunleith Precinct #2 for many years. He was also an avid beekeeper for over 30 years, having harvested swarms of bees throughout the tri-state area and was a former member of the Stateline Beekeepers Association.
Surviving are his wife of almost 68 years, Velda (Glick) Temperley; a daughter, Darlene (William) Schiele, of Flower Mound, TX; six sons, Robert (Bonnie) Temperley, of Clinton, IA, Kenneth (Janell) Temperley, of East Dubuque, IL, James (Janet) Temperley, of Bettendorf, IA, Terry (Debi) Temperley and Randy (Jayne) Temperley, both of East Dubuque, IL, and Tim (Beth) Temperley, of Dallas, TX; 18 Grandchildren; 21 Great-Grandchildren; a brother, Gerald (Pat) Temperley, of East Dubuque, IL; and a sister, Sheila (Roger) Crapp, of Longmont, CO.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ronald and Paul Temperley; and sisters, Jane Hemmer and three in infancy.
A Douglas M. "Jim" Temperley Memorial Fund has been established.
