Donnie was born on September 5, 1942, in Boscobel, WI, son of Bernard and Virginia (Zimpel) Meyer. He was a graduate of Boscobel High School, Class of 1960. He joined the Navy shortly thereafter, receiving an honorable discharge in 1963.
Donnie learned the tavern business from his father, at the family's bar, in Boscobel, WI. He bought his first tavern in 1970, the Hof Brau Haus, and his second in 1972, The Hi-Hat Lounge, both in East Dubuque. ln September, 1986, Donnie opened Admiral's Hi-Hat West, on Main Street, in Dubuque. By 2003, he had sold each of his businesses, and for the past eight years Admiral had been doing some leisurely bartending at his daughter's bar, The Kat's Meow Tavern, in East Dubuque.
Donnie looked forward to deer season each year and spending the week with his good friends from Boscobel. Many stories were told as these friends reminisced year after year throughout the week - "always being sure to take care of the snow snakes with a bit of blackberry brandy" along the way. Donnie also enjoyed doing a bit of gambling--mainly keno and slots, and looked forward to his trips to Las Vegas. Admiral would proudly state that after many years, "he made a respectable investment in the hotel/casino business!" Nonetheless he truly enjoyed his visits and met many good friends along the way.
Surviving to remember Donnie's stories and laughter are his longtime treasured best friend and companion, Lois L. (Loie) Leytem; two (2) brothers, Pat and Ron Meyer, both of East Dubuque, IL; a sister, Diane (John) Sullivan, of Mount Horeb, WI; his daughter, Tammy (Andy) Forman, and grandson, Ray, of Hazel Green, WI; many nieces and nephews; his extended Leytem family; as well as many dear friends; and his beloved four-legged sidekick, Jake.
Donnie was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Meyer; his mother, Virginia Meyer; and a brother, Dean Meyer.
Donnie and his loved ones would like to " thank" the staff at Mercy Hospital for the compassionate care he was given over these past four months, and also much gratitude to Hospice, for their support throughout the final days.
In lieu of flowers, a Donald (Admiral) Meyer Memorial Fund has been established.
