Donald C. Hasken, 85, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at St. Mary's Church, in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dean Smith officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marine Corp League.
Visitation will be from 3 P/M to 8 P/M, on Monday, September 25, 2017, at the Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, IL, where the parish rosary will be recited at 2:45 P/M, on Monday. Members of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department will meet at 6 P/M, on Monday.
Donald C. Hasken is the oldest child of Alvina Ricke and Joseph Hasken. He was born in Vinegar Hill Township, IL, on November 23, 1931. Don took a leadership role very early on in his life by helping direct his younger brothers and sisters on the farm. Don always protected his siblings and worked side by side with his dear mother, Alvina. He married his childhood sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betty) Oster, on January 30, 1954, at St. Mary's Church, in East Dubuque, IL, and together they raised ten (10) children. Don served in the Army as a newlywed and was stationed in Colorado Springs, CO, before settling back to East Dubuque to work as a foreman for the John Deere Foundry for (33) years. During retirement, he enjoyed traveling the country driving for Iowa Coaches Tour buses. Don and Betty enjoyed also enjoyed traveling together, especially with their children, during their (49) years of marriage. Don was a member of St. Mary's Church, in East Dubuque, IL. He was a former volunteer fireman for East Dubuque in his younger days along with being an East Dubuque City Council member. Don loved the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He was a kind and generous soul who devoted his life to his family. He had a great sense of humor and was a very loving, hardworking and patient man. Don was a person that loved meeting new people and enjoyed a good conversation.
Don is survived by his nine (9) children, Mike Hasken, (and his children, Stephanie and Jared), Jim (& Lorna) Hasken, of Muscatine, IA, (and their children, Andrew, Christopher, and Emily), Jack (& Sarah) Hasken, of Dubuque, IA, (and their children, Heather and Taylor), Mary (& Vladimir) Kotacka, of Yelm, WA, Donny (& Kim) Hasken, of Dubuque, IA, (and their children, Amber, Adam and Austin), Ann (& John) Ward, of Mendora, IL, (and their children, Brittany and Angela), Betsy McClurge, of Cedar Rapids, IA, (and her children, Emma and Ava), Maria (& Glenn) Averkamp, of Cedar Rapids, IA, (and their children, Sam and Natalie), and Don's youngest son, David Hasken, of Dubuque, IA. Don and Betty's love for children was evident when their grandchildren started showing up and this was very special to both of them. He also has nine (9) great-grandchildren and two (2) great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Roseann Nauman, and her husband, Harlan, of East Dubuque, IL; his in-laws, Jim Richman, Doris Hasken, LouMae Hasken, Helen Oster and Roger Gartner; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his son, Patrick; his mother, Alvina; his sister, Darlene Gartner; his brothers, Vince and Earl Hasken; along with his wife's siblings.
The family would like to "thank" Sunshine Home Care, Dr. Hillard Salas, Finley Hospital Emergency Department, Stonehill Care Center, Finley Home Care and his Hospice helpers for bringing comfort to Don in his last months.
