Clifford M. "Clif" Carroll, 85, of Galena, IL, passed away at 2:10 P/M, Friday, February 7, 2014, at home, with his family by his side.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at St. Mary's Church, Galena, IL, with Fr. Max Lasrado officiating. Military honors will be accorded by members of VFW Post #2665 and the Galena American Legion Post.
Friends may call from 4 P/M to 7 P/M, on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena, IL, where the parish scripture service will be at 3:45 P/M, Tuesday.
Clif was born on November 29, 1928, in Stockton, IL, the son of John S. and Nellie (Millane) Carroll. He was a graduate of Stockton High School, Class of 1945, and attended the University of Illinois for two years.
He married Helen Hoefer on February 8, 1964, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, in Freeport, IL. He worked for the U. S. Postal Service moving from clerk, to supervisor. He was then promoted to Postmaster in Lena for a short time before becoming Postmaster of Galena from 1977-1983, when he retired.
Clif was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II. He was past commander and life member of VFW Post #2665, a member of the Galena American Legion Post, of the Blackhawk Eagles Club, Aeries #952, where he served as Past Worthy President and Past Worthy Secretary, the Galena Elks Lodge #882, the Galena Boat Club, NAPS (National Association of Postal Supervisors), of the Jo Daviess County Board, and of St. Mary's Church, where he served as usher for many years.
He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. Clif enjoyed hunting, fishing, and numerous sports events. He had a cabin on the Mississippi River on the "Dead Man's Slough" since 1955 with his brother. He was the last surviving member of a family of eleven.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; a daughter, Margaret Carroll, of Brooklyn, NY; and a son, John (Karen) Carroll, of Franklin, TN; two grandchildren, Kathryn & Jack Carroll; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to the United Churches of Galena Food Pantry or St. Mary's Church, Galena.
