Obituary

Chester W. Lewis, 89, of Galena, IL, passed away on Friday morning, June 6, 2014, at the Galena-Stauss Senior Care Community.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, on Monday, June 9, 2014, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, in Galena, with Rev. Stanislaw Kos, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, in Galena, where military honors will be accorded by members of V.F.W. Post #2665 and the Galena American Legion Post.

Visitation will be from 4 P/M to 8 P/M, on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at the Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, in Galena, where the parish scripture service will be at 3:45 P/M.

Chester was born on August 28, 1924, near Council Hill, IL, the son of Walter and Elsie (Young) Lewis. He was a 1942 graduate of Galena High School. Chester was a veteran of the Army serving in World War II in the European Theater with the 4th Armored Division.

On May 8, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary T. Wagner at St. Joseph's Church, Sinsinawa, WI. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2012.

He was formerly employed at John Deere Dubuque Works as a machinist until his retirement. He was a member of U.A.W. Local #94, of Dubuque, and V.F.W. Post #2665, and B.P.O.E. #882, of Galena.

Chester loved to fish and hunt, enjoyed working on older cars, especially Oldsmobile's and Buick's, and enjoyed playing cards and working crossword puzzles.

Surviving are two (2) sons, Tom (Judy) Lewis, of Cuba City, WI, and John (Julie) Lewis, of Wentzville, MO; four (4) grandchildren, Brian (Robin) Lewis, of Cuba City, WI, Ashley Moseley, Lindsey Lewis, and Mike Lewis, all of Wentzville, MO; five (5) great-grandchildren, Zach Lewis, Zane Lewis, Kayleigh Moseley, Aurora Moseley and Lilly Lewis; his sister, Charlotte Scharpf, of Galena, IL; sisters-in-law, Celene Wagner, of Hazel Green, WI, and Alverna Lewis, of Cuba City, WI; a brother-in-law, LaVerne Voss, of Pearl City, IL; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Jan (Wayne) Wasmund, of Galena, IL.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elsie; a daughter-in-law, Pat Lewis; a brother, James Lewis; sisters, Mary Gothard and Ruth Richardson; brothers-in-law, Clarence Scharpf, Paul Gothard and Mark Richardson.

Chester's family wish to "thank" the nurses and staff at Galena-Stauss Senior Care Community and Fr. Max Lasrado for the comfort and care provided to Chester and his family.
