Carolyn B. Hill, 82, of Galena, IL, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, passed away at 10:47 P/M, on Monday, November 10, 2014, at the Galena-Stauss Senior Care Community.
Private family services will be held at a later date with Rev. Jim McCrea officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena, IL.
The Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena, IL, is serving the family.
Carolyn was born on May 31, 1932, in Youngstown, PA, the daughter of Robert W. and Ellen (Cotterly) Burton. She was a graduate of the Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Class of 1953. She married James Robert Hill on November 7, 1953, in Philadelphia, PA. They then moved to Des Moines, IA, where he practiced medicine and they raised their family.
Carolyn was an accomplished pianist, even playing with the Fred Waring Orchestra in Philadelphia. She was a wonderful gardener and homemaker, and enjoyed doing volunteer work while living in Des Moines and through her church.
When her children were old enough, she returned to college and received her BA Cum Laude in Psychology from Drake University in 1975. She and her husband, Bob, moved to Galena in 1994 to be close to their family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Carolyn was a devoted wife, and courageously cared for husband through nine (9) years of Alzheimers disease before he passed away December 24, 2000.
Through all the ups and downs she maintained a happy and cheerful outlook on life and never lost her sense of humor. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy. She will be sadly missed.
Surviving are two (2) daughters, Dr. Linda Hill, of Glens Falls, NY, and Dr. Barbara (Dr. Gary) Bernard, of Galena, IL; four (4) grandchildren, Ellie (Kyle Colgan), Sam, Andy and Joe; a sister, Barbara (Robert) Lannamann, of Camden, ME; and a very special friend, JoAnn Brantley, of Carlisle, IA.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Dubuque.
Carolyn's family wishes to "thank" the staff and nurses at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community for the loving care they provided Carolyn, and also the nurses at Hospice of Dubuque, for all the wonderful help they gave her at the end of life.
