Obituary

Ambrose C. "Ambie" Roth, 90, of East Dubuque, IL, passed away, suddenly, at 10:24 A/M, Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital, Dubuque, IA.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A/M, Monday, April 28, 2014, at St. Mary's Church, East Dubuque, with Fr. Francis Steffen officiating.  Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of American Legion Post #787.

Friends may call from 2 P/M to 7 P/M, Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, where the parish rosary will be recited at 1:45 P/M.  Members of American Legion Post #787 will meet at the funeral home at 4 P/M, Sunday, and members of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department will meet at the funeral home at 4:30 P/M, Sunday.

Ambie was born on December 16, 1923, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Valentine and Freda (Helbing) Roth.  He married his one true love, Margie J. Sarazin, on July 25, 1945, in Dubuque.

He was a veteran of the Army serving during World War II.  Ambie served with Cannon Company 347th Infantry regiment.  He crossed the English Channel on D-Day fighting thru France, Holland, & Germany.  He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.  Other battles and campaigns included the Rhineland and Ardennes, Central Europe.  Ambie received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal, European theater campaign ribbon, Victory medal, Combat Infantry badge, European African Middle Eastern campaign ribbon, and numerous other medals.  He ended his service on December 14, 1945.

Ambie served as Mayor of East Dubuque.  He was formerly employed at John Deere Dubuque Works until his retirement in 1982.  He enjoyed farming, moving from East Dubuque, in 1966, to his farm.  Ambie was an avid Euchre player.  As of late, he enjoyed riding his scooter around the farm, especially back to the quarry to talk to his buddies.

He was a member of the East Dubuque Drun & Bugle Corps, UAW Local #94, VFW Post #7976 and American Legion Post #787, both of East Dubuque, Galena Elks Lodge #882, and the Galena Eagles Club.  He was a former member of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department.  Ambie will be remembered for the "great" man he was and for all the things he did for the people he loved and his community.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Margie J. Roth; a daughter, Diane Korish (special friend, Carl Langkamp), of Benton,WI; two (2) sons, Duane V. Roth, of Ash Flats, AR, and David R. (Pam) Roth, of East Dubuque, IL; six (6) Grandchildren; twenty-six (26) Great-Grandchildren; three (3) Great-Great-Grandchildren; his siblings, Darlene Gibson, Helen (Ron) Metcalf; and a sister-in-law, Lois Roth, all of East Dubuque, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine & Freda Roth; a son, Daniel A. Roth; a granddaughter, Tammy L. Roth; a great-granddaughter, Chelsie Jo Roth; his siblings, John Speaker, Carrie Johnston, Wayne, Edward, Louis & Donald Roth; and brother-in-law, Gordon Gibson.
